Book Coaching

Finish the book. And make it good.

A developmental edit tells you what’s wrong with a finished draft and how to fix it. Book coaching is different: it’s ongoing, side-by-side work while you write. You get an experienced novelist reading your pages as you produce them, structural guidance before problems calcify into a whole draft, and the steady accountability that turns “someday” into a manuscript.

If you’ve started a book more than once, if you have a draft that stalled at chapter nine, or if you simply write better with a deadline and a reader waiting, this is a great option. And I love this kind of work.

How It Works

Coaching runs on a simple monthly rhythm:

  • You submit pages twice a month: up to 25 pages of manuscript per submission, or up to 10 pages of outline, synopsis, or planning material, so you always have a deadline and I always give your work a close, unhurried read.
  • You get a detailed feedback letter with each submission. These aren’t margin nitpicks, but substantive guidance on character, structure, pacing, and what’s keeping (or losing) your reader.
  • We talk twice a month: a 45–60 minute call after each submission to dig into the feedback, solve problems, and plan the next stretch of writing.
  • You have email access between sessions for quick questions. That sudden midnight thought about how maybe the novel needs to be in first person shouldn’t have to wait two weeks.

Because a book takes time, coaching engagements begin with a three-month commitment. Most writers work with me for six months to a year, roughly the arc of a serious draft or revision.

Who This Is For

  • Writers with a book they’ve been meaning to write for years. The novel, the memoir, the project that keeps not happening. Coaching makes it happen.
  • Writers mid-draft and stuck. You don’t need an edit on a finished manuscript; you need help getting the manuscript finished.
  • First-time authors who want a guide. I’ll teach you the craft as we go. We’ll hit things like structure, scene-building, and tension in an organic way, so you finish this book a better writer than you started.

What I Bring

I’m a working novelist as well as an editor — winner of the William Peden Prize, with fiction in The Missouri ReviewThe Southern Review, and Narrative Magazine, among others. So I’m very familiar with the sagging middle, the character who won’t come alive, the structure that made sense in the outline and then collapsed on the page. I also know a lot about the slog a novel can be: the self-doubt, the scheduling, the life challenges. We can tackle all of that.

And it’s always your story. My job is to help you write the strongest version of your book.

“Adam really helped me get to the next level, not by being prescriptive, but by uncovering what I really cared about in the story—and then empowering me to revise accordingly.” — Christine Olivas, Fiction Writer

Pricing & Getting Started

Coaching engagements typically begin at $750/month. Because this is an ongoing working relationship, the first step is a conversation.

Schedule a free 20-minute call and we’ll talk about your book, where you are, and whether we’re the right fit. No obligation or hard-sell nonsense. It’s just a chance to talk about your goals.

If this times don’t work, just send me an email directly at adambprince@gmail.com, and we’ll figure it out!
